Spiral binding is a common method of assembling a booklet or other printed project using a metal or heavy-duty plastic coil that is inserted through pre-punched holes along the spine. It is also known as coil binding as the spiral is twisted along the spine to hold the pages together.

How Much Margin Do You Leave?

It is very important to design your print project with the finishing method in mind.

A spiral bound book needs a certain margin to enable the paper to be punched or drilled and for the spiral to be inserted into. The margin will depend on the number of pages and the size of the spiral. You will need to decide which edge the book is to be bound on before starting the design. Then you will need to check with the printer how much margin is required. It is normally at least 1” to 1.5” or 25mm to 40mm. This may vary depending on the project. If the margin is too small there is the possibility of text or graphics falling in the binding area.

It is much easier, and cheaper, to set the margins correctly initially rather than try and correct later in the process.

What’s the Difference Between Spiral Binding and Wire-O Bound?

The spiral binding uses a continuous metal or plastic wire. The wire-o binding uses metal or plastic loops of varying sizes that are hooked through the pre-punched pages and then closed. Both have a range of color options and finishes available.

What’s the Max Page Number of Pages for Spiral Bound?

The minimum number of pages for a spiral bound project is four and the process can be used up to a few hundred. The actual number depends on the weight of the paper used and the maximum diameter of the spiral available. It is important to consult your printer before starting your project. If there are too many pages for the chosen paper stock then the book will not open or lay flat properly.

Sometimes spiral bound projects are split into more than one book if this is an issue with size.

Spiral Binding Advantages

There are many reasons why spiral binding is a popular choice for a printing project.

There is no specific number of pages required for the print project. Other methods, such as perfect binding or saddle stitching, require a page count divisible by specific amounts, for example by four. This is because the printed sheets are folded before finishing and binding. A spiral bound book has the sheets cut and trimmed before the binding is applied. This means the method is suitable for both low and high page counts.

Once opened, the pages can be turned 360 degrees and the book lays flat. This is perfect for a technical manual or a calendar. Spiral binding is also very useful if the pages need to be scanned or copied. An example of this would be an educational booklet. If the purpose of the book is to be able to refer to it while not holding it open then this binding method is very suitable. A calendar is a perfect example of how to utilize spiral binding. Once each page has been displayed, it can be folded over completely and is flat enough to mount on a wall.

A presentation book for a meeting is another good example where the spiral binding is used. The book can be laid flat on a desk as each section is referred to.

Spiral binding is a great option for short runs of printing. The set-up time and costs can be lower than for other binding methods. It is also very simple to add a front and back cover in another material. This can be printed to enhance the look of a project. Clear and colored covers are also used, which also serve to protect the printed book.

If you have a project with tabs that highlight sections of your book, spiral binding is a good choice. Spiral bound books can have pages added or removed and be re-bound, which is not possible with many other options.

What Types of Books Are Spiral Binding?
